How to Paint Wrought Iron Fences
Wrought iron fences might improve the look of your home, but age and weather elements can damage it and cause paint flaking. Find out how to paint your fence the right way and improve the look of your fence easily.
Prepare Your Wrought Iron Fence
What type of paint to use on a wrought iron fence depends on various factors. A metal paint is the best overlay for a wrought iron fence, because it provides a superior-looking finish. There are two main types of metal paint: Oil-based metal paints leave a smooth, glossy finish, while water-based metal paints are quick-drying and maintain their color over time. You will need a metal priming paint, too. This ensures that the metal paint sticks to the surface of your fence and provides extra protection.
Painting your wrought iron fence when the weather is dry is a great idea. If your fence is wet, application will be difficult.
Place a drop cloth — an impermeable sheet of plastic or paper that will catch paint if it drops from your fence — on the ground to prevent splatters, especially if you’re painting on a windy day. A drop cloth protects your lawn and flowers from harmful paint toxins.
Remove Old Paint
Before you apply the paint and primer to your fence, remove any old paint. Ensure you get rid of dust, rust and oil from your fence before you start decorating to guarantee that paint adheres to the fence. A wire brush (a brush with hard bristles that cleans tough surfaces) eliminates imperfections on an older wrought iron fences. Alternatively, use a sander, a powerful tool that will smooth the surface of your fence.
It’s important that you wear a dust mask when you brush or sand your fence to prevent old paint — which might contain dangerous metals like lead — from getting into your lungs.
Use Paint and Primer
Apply metal priming paint to your fence. You can either use a paint brush with a medium thickness or a paint sprayer. Apply two coats of primer and leave your fence to dry for 24 hours. The next day, apply metal paint to your fence. If you’re using an oil-based paint, remember to place a paintbrush in mineral spirit, which makes it easier to clean the brush once you’re done. If your paint is water-based, place the brush in water before you start.
You will need to apply several coats of paint. Apply each coat within an hour of the previous one; then, leave your fence to dry.
Follow these tips to ensure your wrought iron fence gets maximum coverage and looks great for years to come.
