A fence can add a lot of value to a property, but, it does require some love and affection. No matter if it is wood, vinyl, or chain link, caring for your fence is a year-round process.
Which type of fence can withstand the harsh Austin summer?

Wooden fences might not be as strong as wrought iron fences, but they offer an inexpensive option for those who are looking for something a bit more cost effective. Rain and wind might have trouble against a sturdy built fence, but there is the option for fence repair allowing for any potential problems to be fixed easily.
Cleaning Your Fence in Summer
No matter which type of fencing you have, you must care for it if it is dirty. Inspecting the fence is the best way to see what exactly you need to work on.
While most fences that are a little worn or dirty can be cleaned with a good scrub, there are other ways to deep clean your fence:
- Place plastic drop cloths along both sides of your fence, and cover them with cloth tarps or old bed sheets. By doing this you will help absorb any runoff water that could otherwise harm your grass and vegetation.
- Mix one gallon of water in a large bucket with a quart of chlorine bleach. Pour that solution into a hand held garden sprayer.
- Begin spraying the fence starting off with one side. Start at the top of the first slate and work down to the bottom, spraying the solution.
- Continue this until the fence is completely covered in the solution and let sit for 5 minutes
- Once the solution has had a chance to penetrate the stains, wash off the solution with water from a garden hose.
Keep Your Fence Free From Environmental Summer Hazards
A number of environmental hazards can be associated with fence cleaning. Some may be a little more worrisome than others. With grass and weeds constantly growing around your fence, it is necessary to keep it clear of both.
Start at either end of your fence with a weed eater to clear the grass and weeds that the lawn mower can’t get. Turn the weed eater on and hold it at a 30-degree angle. Move it from side to side from one end of the fence to the other until all the grass and weeds against the fence are cut down.
While Austin summers are known for their humidity and high temperatures, you can do your part to keep your fence standing tall throughout the year.
